The Uttaranchal Daivi Aapda Peedit Sahayata Samiti was established after the devastating earthquake that struck at 2:55 am on 20–21 October 1991, causing maximum destruction in the upper Bhagirathi valley of Uttarkashi, especially in Bhatwadi block. The disaster claimed 768 lives, killed 8000 livestock, and destroyed 20,700 houses, along with many temples, schools, and 20 road bridges.
Hundreds of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh volunteers walked 18–25 km to deliver relief in remote villages. Under the guidance of Dr. Nityanand ji, a temporary relief center was set up in Maneri, which now functions permanently as Sevashram Keshavpuram Maneri, one of the leading service centers in the country.
On 20 November 1991, the organization was formally registered as Uttaranchal Daivi Aapda Peedit Sahayata Samiti. It is exempt under Section 80G and 12A of the Income Tax Act.
